We provide a routine vaccination and health check service for all our horses. Computerised records are kept for all visits and reminders are sent out when vaccinations are due. During health checks we can rasp teeth and take blood samples for general screening which are analysed in our laboratory within 24 hours.
Advice on working is readily available and can be backed up with laboratory worm egg counts whenever needed.
Medical Investigations
Many horses suffer from coughing, sneezing, poor performance and weight loss. We are able to investigate these conditions and many more using our portable endoscopes and ECG machines along with full laboratory back up.
Dental Work
At Shires we are able to undertake all aspects of routing dental treatment. Examples of procedures regularly undertaken are standard rasping, removal of wolf teeth, creating of bit seats and grinding of major overgrowths using the latest power tools. Many horses resent extensive dental work so sedatives are administered when required to enable procedures to be carried out effectively and safely. Lameness Investigations
Full lameness investigations are carried out although by their very nature these are time consuming and can take up to 3 hours to complete. Typically a short initial consultation or visit will be made after which a longer session, if needed, is arranged. During the in depth investigation we use nerve blocks, x-rays and ultrasound scanning as needed.
Pre-Purchase Examinations
Buying a horse can be a costly and stressful experience. To help detect any problems before you buy we are able to carry out a full pre-purchase examination (vetting) for you. Unfortunately vetting are tied up in a lot of legal red tape so it is essential that you speak to either John Treanor or Paul Snape before booking your visit.
Minor Surgical Procedures
We perform all the usual minor surgical procedures such as lump removals, colt castrations and suturing of accidental wounds. A few operations requiring general anaesthesia such as foal umbilical hernia repairs are undertaken after prior arrangement.
