Shires Veterinary Practice

FAQ

How can I ensure that I always see the same vet?
Continuity of care is important to us as your usual vet will understand your animals needs. With our rota system we can inform you if your usual vet is not available for any reason. If you wish to see a particular vet then please inform us of this when booking you appointment or visit

Why does my animal need checking to receive a repeat prescription?
The medicines requirements in the UK only allow us to provide a repeat prescription to an animal that is ‘under our care’. Unfortunately this term is not defined in law but is usually deemed to be that this is every three months. However, your usual vet can advise you further as we may be able to extend this interval depending on your animals’ condition and the medication that it is receiving. For flea and worming preparations, this period is twelve months.

Can I request a written prescription?
Certainly, we are prohibited by law from charging for a written prescription. The current legislation is to be reviewed in October 2008 and this situation may change. Please telephone us if you require a written prescription for your animals’ medication, however your usual interval between prescription checks will still apply.

Can I receive my medications by post?

Of course, we are able to post most medications out to you (a fee for post & packing will apply). There are certain medications (such as insulin and controlled drugs) that we are not able to supply by post.

Do you take payments by BACS and over the telephone?
Yes, if you telephone your usual surgery we will be happy to take payment over the telephone.
