Student Placements

School Work Experience

Shires Veterinary Practice offers the opportunity for enthusiastic students aged 16 plus to experience working in a veterinary practice.  Our busy environment and modern surgical and medical facilities mean that no two days are the same.

There is an extremely high demand for work experience placements as students wishing to apply to train as a veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse require evidence of work experience to help support their application.

Veterinary practices have strict Health and Safety guidelines and are considered a high risk environment and you may also face difficult and emotional situations.

Due to this we can only accept applications from students aged 16+ who are planning to apply or have applied to study veterinary medicine or veterinary nursing.

If you are in school year 10 or 11 we cannot offer you any work experience.

Successful applicants are accepted on a week placement from Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm.

Due to the nature of our work, you will be mainly observing the veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses rather than participating in activities.

You should dress in smart work clothes (no jeans) with comfortable flat shoes as you should expect to be standing for most of the day.

Tasks you may be asked to undertake include:

  • Assisting veterinary nurses with the cleaning of the kennels and theatres
  • Assisting the veterinary nurses with the cleaning, packaging and sterilizing of surgical instruments
  • Assisting veterinary nurses with the care of hospitalized patients
  • Observing veterinary surgeons during consultations
  • Observing veterinary surgeons during surgical and medical procedures
