Calf rearing is often a neglected part of dairy herd management. It is essential that dairt calves gain weight at 0.8kg/day in order to reach a suitable weight and size for service at 15 months. Similarly beef calves that have a good start in life will reach optimal performance later in life.
We can monitor calf scour problems through laboratory diagnosis and sometimes using kits while still on the farm. This will enable us to recommend the correct treatment and preventive measures.
It is more difficult to establish the exact cause of calf pneumonia but through swabbing and/or blood testing we can establish which organisms are responsible for an outbreak and therefore which vaccination regime would suit best.
We can smoke test the buildings to improve the ventilation where that is necessary.
