Dairy farmers must produce clean hygienic milk of good quality to achieve premium payments.
We can investigate mastitis problems either on a herd or an individual herd basis.
Milk samples will be examined in our laboratory to ascertain the causal organism which will not only give us a useful idea of treatment but also an indication of the source of the infection. It takes a minimum of two days to grow and identify the bacteria as they need to be cultured in different media.
We will start the investigation of a herd problem (either of clinical mastitis or of high cell counts) by examining your milk records using the computer programme Herd Companion which, with your permission, allows us to look at your milk records. This will be followed by a visit to the farm to see the environment that the cows live in and to watch you milking. We will be able to assess the teat condition which is an essential part of the udder's defence to mastitis.
