Preventative healthcare

At Shires Veterinary Practice we believe that prevention is better than cure. We can offer annual vaccinations for dogs, cat and rabbits. Your annual vaccination also includes a full health assessment and a chance to discuss any concerns that you might have about your pets' health.

Medical Cases

We have a high standard of modern diagnostic equipment in house.
At our Stone surgery we have a high frequency x-ray machine, a digital ultrasound scanner, 4 lead ECG and two endoscopes, allowing investigation into even the smallest patient. Our in house laboratory allows for blood test results to often be ready the same day, however more complex tests are sent away and may take 2-3 days for results to be received.
We are glad to offer hip and elbow scoring under the BVA/Kennel Club Scheme
Will Jeffels has a special interest in cardiology (hearts), and works closely with our visiting cardiology to provide a complete service.

Dentistry

We are happy to undertake dental procedures including dental x-rays, routing hygiene work, rabbit/rodent dentistry and complex extractions. Our veterinary nurse team are able to offer advice on how to keep your pets smile clean and shiny.

Surgical and Anaesthesia Cases

We are able to offer a full surgical service ranging from routing neutering to complex procedures. Shires Vets Ltd uses the latest anaesthetic technology available to veterinary practices, these are comparable to human anaesthetic drugs. This means that for most procedures, patients are able to return home the very same day.

Bruce Campbell works at our Stone surgery and is currently undertaking his certificate in surgery. He is able to offer many complex surgical procedures including fracture fixations, maxillofacial surgery and upper airway surgery as well as a full range of soft tissue surgery.

Admissions and Discharges

We ask that animals are admitted between 8.30 - 9.30am on the morning of their procedure.
Dogs, cats and ferrets should not be allowed food from 8pm the evening before, however fresh water should be available until time of admission.

Rabbits and other 'small furries' should have food available at all times, and please bring some of their usual food with them for the day.

Please ensure that your dog has been out to the toilet that morning, and that cats are kept inside the night before surgery.

Your pet will be admitted by a vet or vet nurse, will then receive a pre med and be settled into their kennel for the day. Animals are usually ready to go home from 3pm onwards. Full post op instructions will be given at discharge.
