Shires Veterinary Practice

Flea Treatment & Vaccination Policy

Flea Treating Your Pet

Shires Veterinary Practice recommends that all cats & dogs receive routine flea treatment, along with household flea treatment.

Cats: We currently recommend Frontline for cats. This is available as a spray or a spot on preparation to be used once a month.
Dogs: We currently recommend Prac-Tic spot on preparation for dogs. This is to be used once a month. Currently, we have an offer on Prac-Tic: Buy three, get one free, or Buy six, get two free.
Household Flea Treatment: We have two products available for treating your house: RIP Fleas & Skooch. RIP Fleas is a chemical product which provides protection for up to 12 months. Skooch is a chemical free alternative that works for approximately 6 weeks.

For advice on flea treatments, please ask a member of staff.
We are also able to advise on flea treatment of rabbits & ferrets

Vaccination

Shires Veterinary Practice recommends that all animals are vaccinated against major diseases.

Cats: Kittens are vaccinated from 9 weeks of age. The core vaccines are for Feline Panleukopaenia (Infectious diarrhoea), Feline Calicivirus & Feline Herpesvirus (Cat Flu). We are also able to offer vaccination against Feline Leukaemia Virus and Feline Chlamydia. If you cat is an outdoor cat the vaccination against these latter two diseases is strongly recommended. After the primary course of two vaccines 3 weeks apart, an annual booster is necessary to maintain your cats’ immunity.

Dogs: Puppies are vaccinated from 6 weeks of age. The core vaccines are for Canine Parvovirus, Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis & Coronavirus.
We also recommend that your dog is vaccinated against Kennel Cough (Bordatella), especially if they socialise with other dogs at all. After the primary course of two vaccines 2-4 weeks apart, an annual booster is necessary to maintain your dogs’ immunity.

Rabbits: Rabbits are vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Even house rabbits should be vaccinated against these two diseases. The two vaccines are given two weeks apart. Following initial vaccination, regular booster vaccinations (every 6 months for Myxomatosis & every year for VHD) are essential to maintain your rabbits’ immunity.

Ferrets: We are able to offer distemper vaccination for ferrets
