Hungry labrador Ellie – May was brought into our Eccleshall practice after swallowing a number of pebbles that had become dangerously lodged in her stomach. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our vet Ellie Chiswell performed surgery to ensure all of the stones were removed so that Ellie-May could make a full recovery.<\/p>\n

Ellie-May’s owner Robert Price, from Gnosall, realised the severity of the situation and didn’t delay in bringing her in.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u00a0had swallowed\u00a011\u00a0stones in total. I found seven when she vomited up her breakfast and she managed to pass one at the other end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI still took her straight to the vets, though, where they found a further three lodged in her stomach.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vet Ellie told us “This was a pretty unique and remarkable case.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe took a series of abdominal radiographs which\u00a0demonstrated multiple stones within the stomach,\u00a0with\u00a0the size and number of stones\u00a0making\u00a0it a very unusual occurrence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEllie-May\u00a0promptly\u00a0had an exploratory laparotomy (which is\u00a0surgery to explore her abdomen),\u00a0with\u00a0an incision made into her small intestine to remove the large stones,\u00a0and\u00a0the rest of the intestine\u00a0was\u00a0checked to ensure no further stones.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe procedure was successful. All stones were removed and\u00a0Ellie-May\u00a0has now made a full and uneventful recovery.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe spent a\u00a0couple of weeks\u00a0recuperating,\u00a0with\u00a0exercise\u00a0on her lead\u00a0only for the first week due to the size of her abdominal wound, with this\u00a0exercise\u00a0gradually\u00a0increased\u00a0as her recovery\u00a0progressed\u00a0and the wound healed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Relieved owner Robert admitted his beloved pet\u2019s recovery is a weight off his mind, saying: \u201cEllie-May\u2019s as fit as a fiddle again now and we\u2019re hoping she has learned her lesson.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThankfully,\u00a0we can look back on it now\u00a0without any adverse\u00a0effects\u00a0but it could have been very serious,\u00a0so we\u2019re grateful to Shires Vets for their expert help.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
