• Veterinary Nursing students

There are two routes to becoming qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN): vocational (college) training or higher education (university degree) qualification. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). More information can be found here.

At Shires Vets we are currently accepting applications from degree student veterinary nurses at Shires Vets. Here’s some more information about what a placement might look like for you at our practice.

Degree student nurses experience

At Shires Vet, we are happy to take on student nurses from all training stages.

Opportunities available for student nurses and working hours

As a student, you will work alongside an experienced nursing team that includes certificate holders. You will have the opportunity to work within busy nurse clinics and get the hands-on experience needed.

The placement students will work 35 hours per week, which includes a weekend rota of 1:7 Saturdays.

What we expect from our student nurses and what they can expect in return

Students are involved in every area of the practice. We are a close-knit team and we all help each other out.  They will receive the support of a clinical supervisor who will oversee their training.  They will also get full support when training in theatre, consults and other areas of the practice.

Travel and accommodation

Due to the lack of public transport, we recommend students travel by car to our sites in Stafford, Eaton Park, Eccleshall and Gnosall.

Our Stone branch, however, is easily accessible by public transport. A bus (101 Hanley) runs from Stafford railway station to Eccleshall Road Shops taking approximately 30 minutes. It is then a 0.5 mile walk to the practice.

As a practice, Shires Vets unable to provide accommodation for students. However, we can make local recommendations for places to stay in the area if required.
